미국에서 의사가 되는 방법에는 두 가지 경로가 있습니다.

  1. M.D. (Doctor of Medicine)
    일반 의과대학을 졸업하고 M.D. 학위를 취득하여 의사가 되는 길
  2. D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine)
    Osteopathic Medical School에 진학하여 D.O. 학위를 받고, 의사 자격시험(USMLE 또는 COMLEX)을 통과한 후 의사가되는 길
  1. D.O. 의사의 역할
  • 현재 미국에서 활동하는 의사의 약 10%가 D.O. 의사로 되어 있다.
  • D.O. 의사는 MD 동일하게 모든 전문 분야에서 진료할 수 있으며, 수술·연구·전문의 과정 등에서 법적 차이가 없다.
  • 일반적으로 많은 학생들이 M.D. 과정을 선호하지만, 최근에는 D.O. 프로그램의 위상과 경쟁력도 크게 높아지고 있다.
  1. D.O. 프로그램의 장점
  • 환자 중심의 진료(holistic care)와 예방의학을 강조
  • Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) 기법 교육 포함
  • 의학 교육 과정과 임상 실습은 MD와 거의 동일

  • 미국에는 AACOM (American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine) 에 등록된 43개의D.O. 의과대학이 있다.
  • 매년 수천 명의 학생들이 이들 학교를 통해 의학 교육을 받고 있으며, 졸업 후 레지던시 매칭과 전문의 과정으로 진출하고 있다.
